Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp dried thyme (optional)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for browning)

For the Gravy

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup milk or heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Optional Vegetables (for a full one-pan meal)

  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 cup baby carrots
  • 2 medium potatoes, thinly sliced

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Hamburger Steaks

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and dried thyme (if using).
  2. Mix until well combined, then form into 4-6 patties.

Step 2: Brown the Steaks

  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat.
  2. Sear each hamburger steak on both sides until browned (about 2-3 minutes per side). They don’t need to be fully cooked; they’ll finish cooking in the oven.
  3. Transfer the browned steaks to a greased baking dish.

Step 3: Prepare the Gravy

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, beef broth, milk or heavy cream, Worcestershire sauce, and salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Pour the gravy mixture over the hamburger steaks in the baking dish.

Step 4: Add Optional Vegetables (if using)

  1. Arrange the sliced mushrooms, carrots, and potatoes around the hamburger steaks in the baking dish, spooning a little gravy over the vegetables for flavor.

Step 5: Bake

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the hamburger steaks are cooked through and the vegetables are tender.

Step 6: Serve

  1. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly.
  2. Serve warm with the rich gravy and enjoy your Amish-style comfort meal!

This recipe pairs wonderfully with fresh rolls or a green salad.
