- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp dried thyme (optional)
- 1 tbsp olive oil (for browning)
For the Gravy
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1/2 cup milk or heavy cream
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Optional Vegetables (for a full one-pan meal)
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1 cup baby carrots
- 2 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
Instructions
Step 1: Make the Hamburger Steaks
- In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and dried thyme (if using).
- Mix until well combined, then form into 4-6 patties.
Step 2: Brown the Steaks
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat.
- Sear each hamburger steak on both sides until browned (about 2-3 minutes per side). They don’t need to be fully cooked; they’ll finish cooking in the oven.
- Transfer the browned steaks to a greased baking dish.
Step 3: Prepare the Gravy
- In a bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, beef broth, milk or heavy cream, Worcestershire sauce, and salt and pepper to taste.
- Pour the gravy mixture over the hamburger steaks in the baking dish.
Step 4: Add Optional Vegetables (if using)
- Arrange the sliced mushrooms, carrots, and potatoes around the hamburger steaks in the baking dish, spooning a little gravy over the vegetables for flavor.
Step 5: Bake
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the hamburger steaks are cooked through and the vegetables are tender.
Step 6: Serve
- Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly.
- Serve warm with the rich gravy and enjoy your Amish-style comfort meal!
This recipe pairs wonderfully with fresh rolls or a green salad.
