Introduction
Tiramisu is a classic Italian no-bake dessert known for its rich layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers, creamy mascarpone filling, and a dusting of cocoa powder. Translating to “pick me up” in Italian, tiramisu is both a comforting and indulgent dessert perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
For 6–8 servings:
- 6 large egg yolks
- 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar
- 1 cup (240ml) heavy cream
- 1 cup (240g) mascarpone cheese (room temperature)
- 1 1/2 cups (360ml) brewed espresso or strong coffee (cooled)
- 1/4 cup (60ml) coffee liqueur (optional, e.g., Kahlúa or Marsala wine)
- 1 package (about 7 oz / 200g) ladyfinger biscuits (savoiardi)
- Unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting
- Dark chocolate shavings (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Whip the Egg Yolks and Sugar:
In a heatproof bowl, whisk together egg yolks and sugar. Place over a double boiler (or simmering pot) and whisk continuously for about 8–10 minutes until thick and pale. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. - Whip the Cream:
In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Chill while preparing the rest. - Mix the Mascarpone:
In another bowl, whisk the mascarpone until smooth. Gently fold the mascarpone into the egg yolk mixture until well combined. - Fold in the Whipped Cream:
Carefully fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone-egg mixture until smooth and fluffy. - Prepare the Coffee Mixture:
In a shallow dish, combine the espresso and coffee liqueur (if using). - Layer the Tiramisu:
Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture (do not soak). Arrange a layer in a 9×9-inch (or similar) dish. Spread half of the cream mixture over the top. Repeat with another layer of dipped ladyfingers and remaining cream. - Chill and Set:
Cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, preferably overnight. - Dust and Serve:
Before serving, generously dust the top with unsweetened cocoa powder and sprinkle with dark chocolate shavings if desired.
Description
Tiramisu is creamy, light yet rich, with contrasting textures — spongy soaked ladyfingers and smooth mascarpone cream. The coffee flavor pairs beautifully with the mild sweetness, and the cocoa finish adds a slightly bitter balance.
Tips
- Use high-quality mascarpone and fresh espresso for the best taste.
- Chill overnight for a firmer, more flavorful tiramisu.
- For a child-friendly version, skip the liqueur.
- Gently fold the whipped cream to avoid deflating the mixture.
Variations
- Strawberry Tiramisu: Use strawberry puree instead of coffee and layer with fresh strawberries.
- Chocolate Tiramisu: Add melted chocolate to the mascarpone mix.
- Matcha Tiramisu: Replace coffee with green tea and dust with matcha powder.
- Vegan Tiramisu: Use coconut cream, vegan mascarpone alternatives, and egg-free ladyfingers.
Correction
Avoid common mistakes:
- Don’t oversoak ladyfingers — they’ll turn mushy.
- Don’t over-whip the cream — it may turn grainy.
- Avoid watery mascarpone — it should be thick and creamy.
Enjoy!
Serve chilled and savor each creamy, coffee-infused bite. Whether for a dinner party or a quiet night in, tiramisu is always a showstopper. Buon appetito!
